SEPTEMBER
Snapshot: This is the swing shift, when you will be harvesting some of the last-of-summer vegetables and planting fall-winter crops.  New plantings establish roots more quickly in warm soils, appreciating also the warmer air temperatures.  Upcoming winter rains will also help plants get established more easily.  Fall is a great time to plant California natives in particular, as well as most other temperature-hardy trees, shrubs and perennials.  Wait until spring for tropicals such as Bougainvillea, Princess Flower and Mandevilla.  Nurseries are stocking up for the big fall planting season.  Late flowering annuals and perennials, ornamental grasses and Crape Myrtle are in bloom.
