Services

We offer several service options in hopes of meeting the greatest degree of client needs.  Whether you are looking for a complete garden design, a planting plan, a design consultation, a planting installation, or fine gardening, we offer the flexibility to work with each client individually.

Garden Design

The design process proceeds directly after initial contact, and follows five stages:

Stage 1:     We schedule an appointment at the client's home to discuss your desires for the garden, noting important elements, the project budget, and scheduling.  We charge a nominal fee for this initial consultation, to assure mutual commitment to the potential project.  This fee is then subtracted from the consequential design process fees, prior to design completion.

Stage 2:

A site survey is developed, incorporating all pertinent measurements and existing conditions.  If the site is large and/or complicated, we would determine that an official survey is required, and we would recommend a surveyor to pe4rform the work.  For smaller, uncomplicated sites, we would complete the survey ourselves.  A scaled existing conditions base plan is then developed.

Stage 3:  Once the survey has been completed, we then develop one or several concept design options, incorporating the client's significant elemental requirements within the demands of the site.  To present these concept design options to the client, we prepare a schematic booklet for the client's review and records, which includes any or all of the following, as needed to illustrate the design concepts: colored plan view sketches, elevations, perspective drawings, and precedent images.

Stage 4:  After the client has approved a concept design, we then develop the project details, and produce design development documents to include any or all of the following: a layout plan, a planting plan, any pertinent detailing, and garden furnishing cut sheets.  Our services may then end at this point.  For project construction we will recommend trusted contractors that we have worked with on previous projects, the client may choose a contractor, or the client may elect to perform the construction him or herself.

Stage 5:  During the construction process, you may wish to benefit from some of our other services.  We offer bidding assistance, plant ordering, plant delivery receiving, planting, and construction observance to assure the integrity of the design intent.  All of these services are charged on an hourly basis to offer maximum flexibility.

Sprouts

Sprouts is our newest garden design service and offers a quick yet comprehensive garden design at an affordable cost. We are excited about it because it has a wide appeal for homeowners: it allows you to realize your dream garden at an affordable price and in a timely manner. Sprouts pricing is based on the size of your garden; for a 1500 square foot area or less the cost is $800. And, to ensure we design the garden of your dreams, the design is a strong collaborative effort between you and a Sprouts designer.

The Sprouts design process proceeds as follows:

  1. The designer conducts site analysis of the client’s existing garden conditions.
  2. The designer completes a layout of the client’s garden parameters.
  3. The client and designer discuss the client’s garden priorities.
  4. The client dreams of the possibilities with our images of successful garden precedents.
  5. The designer helps the client to decide on a garden style that suits the client’s lifestyle, home’s architecture, and personal tastes.
  6. The designer sketches options exploring several possibilities of the style in the client’s garden.
  7. The designer drafts the final elements of the garden.
  8. The designer finalizes the planting plan.
  9. The designer offers construction assistance and referrals.
We then provide the client with these tools to help construct the garden of the client’s dreams:
  1. An 11x17 garden site plan, including planting layout.
  2. A plant list which corresponds to the plan.
  3. A list of suppliers of garden elements such as furnishings, fountains, or stone.
  4. A list of trusted contractors that we work with.
  5. A list of additional services that we offer for future reference.

Design Charette

Due to popular demand, Botany of Design is now offering the Design Charette. This intensive design consultation lasts 2-3 hours and costs $300. It is appropriate for small gardens of 1000sf or less with minimal design elements; and it is ideal for do-it-yourselfer's on a budget.

To most effectively benefit from the design charette process, we request that clients prepare the following:

-A scaled drawing of your space at 1/4 or 1/8 scale. It should be on a sheet no larger than 11x17, and should include major elements to remain.
-Photos of gardens and plants that reflect the style you like, and from which you draw inspiration.
-The completed questionnaire that we send to you prior to our meeting. This will help you to give prior thought to the uses you want your space to accommodate.

Upon completion of the design charette, we will deliver:
-A scaled design sketch which shows the layout of your new garden, including major garden elements (pathways, structures, planting beds, etc.) and a planting plan. The sketch will be simple and easy to read, and can be implemented by do-it-yourselfer's or a contractor.
-Referrals to bidders who can construct your garden project.
-A list of garden resources to use for constructing and furnishing your new garden.

The design process proceeds quickly, thereby allowing you to proceed from idea to new garden quickly and on a budget.

Small Garden Installation

We are equipped to install small gardens, thereby achieving a seamless design process from vision to completion.  This service is particularly effective for fill-in planting.

We have a wide-selection of designer pot catalogs, and can advise and place orders for pots to add to your garden.
